While growing up I got to learn the importance and deeper meaning of what tea meant to my Sri Lankan culture. It was a given that if you visited someone's home, you'd be invited in for a cup of tea, whether you were a longtime friend or someone new. When visiting a Sri Lankan household, it's almost impossible to go more than 30 seconds without being offered tea, and it's an offer you simply can't refuse (you couldn’t even if you wanted to). The kettle was always on, and the aroma of brewing tea filled the air, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The interaction usually goes, "Please come in and at least stay for a tea," and before you know it, you're taking off your shoes, settling in, and enjoying your second cup, lost in conversation. In those moments or acts of inviting someone in for a cup of tea, a deeper connection would form, bringing people together to share each other’s company and create good memories. In those moments, I learned that tea was a vessel for connection, a way to say, "You are welcome, and you are valued."
When I moved away to university, I carried this tradition with me, almost instinctively. Amidst the chaos of studies and the whirlwind of new experiences, tea became my anchor. My dorm room quickly became known as the place to unwind with a warm cuppa. What began as a simple question, "Would you like some tea?"—evolved into cherished rituals with friends. I found myself remembering how each friend liked their tea and at the end of the night, we would gather, each with our preferred brew, and just let the conversation flow. These moments of connection became a way to escape the demands of daily life and truly connect.
Tea has always offered a peaceful and comforting escape from our hectic lives. Even when I wasn't enjoying tea with others, just brewing a cup for myself provided a pocket of peace in my day. It was a moment to sit, enjoy my tea, and find comfort.
Inspired by these experiences, I set out to create a tea collection that embodied this sense of sanctuary. I wanted to share the profound comfort and escape that tea had always given me. But I knew that in a market filled with countless tea options, our teas needed to stand out—not just in flavour, but in the experience they offered. I wanted our teas to feel like a true escape where every part of the experience felt whimsical and special.
So, I created a collection where the teas are inspired by different sanctuaries —places that bring comfort and escape. I didn't want the teas to be a gimmick but rather to have a purpose and meaning. From the unboxing experience to the taste, I want our teas to be carefully and thoughtfully crafted and to feel like they were sent straight from these sanctuaries. Each tea would serve as a memento as if someone from that sanctuary sent it to you themselves.
